UX and Design Projects at EMPEQ

Fast Site Survey App Improvements

"Fast Site Survey eliminates onerous site surveys, time wasting proposal preparation, and concerns about your prospect's ability to pay for your project. Just snap pictures of site equipment using the Fast Site Survey app, and our proprietary algorithms extract key equipment information. With our cloud-based technology, all site survey data on equipment identification, condition, and location are immediately available to all team members."

Project Overview

The primary objective was to increase the speed at which HVAC technicians could complete site surveys. These technicians, specializing in large HVAC units (10–20 tons) for hospitals, universities, and municipal buildings, traditionally relied on slow pen-and-paper methods. The app streamlined this process and introduced financing options for emergency HVAC replacements, addressing a critical need during system failures.

Target Audience and Pain Points

  •  Target Audience: HVAC technicians servicing 10–20 ton units in high-stakes environments like hospitals.
  • Pain Points:
    • Time-consuming manual data entry.
    • Inefficiency during emergencies.
    • Challenges adapting to new tools while valuing simplicity.

My Role and Responsibilities

  • Conducted research and trained the app's AI-powered Optical Character Recognition (OCR) feature.
  • Sourced hundreds of HVAC nameplate images via eBay and HVAC sales sites to train the AI.
  • Optimized the app’s OCR to auto-populate forms, reducing manual input.

Research and Discovery

  • Methods:
    • User interviews via Zoom and phone.
    • Daily feedback from beta testers through email and text.
  • Key Insights:
    • Many technicians initially preferred pen-and-paper for simplicity.
    • Digitization and automation via AI enhanced efficiency without adding complexity.

Design Solutions

  1. Integrated AI-powered OCR to scan HVAC nameplates and auto-fill site survey forms..
  2. Focused on usability for larger HVAC units, aligning with financing solutions.

Tools and Techniques

  • Sketching: Brainstorming initial concepts.

  • Retained essential form pages while seamlessly migrating email functionality.
